What we did

Keep the bath, but make the bathroom brighter
The original bathroom was dark, with a very busy encaustic floor and a small wooden window. The family were clear that they wanted to keep the bath (there are children at home), but they asked for a bright bathroom that was easy to clean, with no taps or brackets sticking out of the wall.
Materials and details
- Small-format white tiles, around 7 × 20 cm, laid horizontally with a fine grout joint. With that many pieces, setting out matters: Yuriy marked the courses so the joints would line up at the corners, the window and the niches.
- Concealed taps and shower above the bath, with two tiled niches for shower gel and shampoo. Nothing protrudes, and the fixed glass screen closes off the shower area without any doors.
- uPVC window with double glazing, replacing the old wooden one.
- Niche above the toilet, making use of the boxing for the concealed cistern.
- Large-format grey porcelain floor tiles, wall-hung toilet, basin with vanity unit, LED mirror and electric towel rail.
How it was done
Yuriy carried out the whole job from start to finish: strip-out, building work, plumbing, fitting the window, tiling and installing the sanitaryware. The concealed water outlets were put in and tested first, then the tiling went up, and only at the very end were the bath, screen and sanitaryware fitted so they wouldn't get damaged during the works.

Strip-out
We removed the old tiles, the sanitaryware and the encaustic floor to take the bathroom back to bare walls.

Walls and uPVC window
We levelled the walls, opened up the final window opening and fitted the uPVC window.

Concealed plumbing
New outlets chased into the wall for the concealed taps and shower, ready before tiling.

Small-format tiling
Yuriy lays the white 7x20 cm tiles one by one, with the joints lined up and the niches already formed.

Bath and finishes
Fitting the bath, the fixed glass screen, the toilet, the basin, the illuminated mirror and the towel rail.
